Bare substrate preparation

HOW TO PREPARE BARE SUBSTRATES

Fibreglass : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Sand well  using 120 grade paper. Clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely. Prime using a Nautix primer following the product recommendations provided in the TDS.

Aluminium : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Remove any trace of oxidation by sanding well using 40 grade paper (aluminium compatible). Do not leave any smooth or shiny areas. Clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry. Prime asap using a Nautix primer (within 4 hours maximum) following the product recommendations provided in the TDS.

Steel : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Grit blast to Sa 2.5 – near white metal surface. If grit blasting is not possible, grind the metal surface with 24-36 grade abrasive discs to a uniform, clean, bright metal surface. Clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely. Prime using a Nautix primer following the product recommendations provided in the TDS.

Bare wood / Plywood : Sand smooth with 120 grade paper and then 240 grade paper. Remove sanding dust by brushing or dusting. Wipe down thoroughly with Nautix SD Degreaser and allow to dry completely, to ensure any residual sanding dust is removed, before applying products recommended for application direct to wood.

Oily woods (ex : teck) : Ensure that the surface is thoroughly degreased using Nautix SD Degreaser to ensure all oils are removed. Sand smooth with 120 grade paper and then 240 grade paper. Remove sanding dust by brushing or dusting. Wipe down thoroughly with Nautix SD Degreaser and allow to dry completely, to ensure any residual sanding dust is removed, before applying products recommended for application direct to wood.

Stainless steel : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Light grit blast to produce a rough profile, clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely prior to application of a Nautix primer following the product recommendations provided in the TDS.

Zinc / Galvanised steel : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Sand well  using 80 grade paper. Clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely. Prime using a Nautix primer following the product recommendations provided in the TDS.

Bronze : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Clean thoroughly and abrade to bright metal using 80 grade paper. Take care when abrading bronze propellers, as excessive abrading can alter the profile of the propeller causing it to be out of balance. Clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely before applying products recommended for application direct to bronze.

Cast iron : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Grit blast to Sa 2.5. If grit blasting is not possible, grind the metal surface with 24-36 grade abrasive discs to a uniform clean rough surface. Clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry completely. Ensure that all evidence of corrosion (e.g. iron oxide and iron sulphide) is removed prior to the application of a Nautix primer, following the product recommendations provided in TDS.

Lead : Degrease the surface with Nautix SD Degreaser. Sand well using 80 grade paper or power wire brush. Clean thoroughly with fresh water and allow to dry. Prime using a Nautix primer following the product recommendations provided in TDS.
